When Amazon first acquired Ring, I'll admit I was cautiously optimistic. A well-designed smart doorbell should help keep your home safe, alert you to packages, pets, and unexpected guests, without turning your front porch into a surveillance grid. But with the recent rollout of its new facial recognition feature, Familiar Faces, I can honestly say I'm deeply troubled.

Because this is not just about smarter alerts. It is a fundamental shift in how technology watches us, even when we did not sign up for it.

What Familiar Faces Actually Does

At face value, Familiar Faces sounds almost helpful. Instead of generic "Person at Door" alerts, Ring lets you label and recognize up to 50 people you trust. Family members, neighbors, your dog walker. Once tagged, your Ring device identifies them automatically and delivers personalized alerts like "Emma at Front Door."

Ring positions this as a way to reduce notification fatigue and make home security feel more intelligent. And to be fair, fewer useless alerts is appealing, especially in busy households.

But this is where convenience quietly turns into something more concerning.

The Real Privacy Problem: Biometric Surveillance at the Doorstep

Facial recognition is not just another feature update. It is biometric identification. That means your face is converted into a digital template, a faceprint, that uniquely identifies you.

Unlike a password, a faceprint cannot be reset.

Once Familiar Faces is enabled, Ring does not just analyze the people you label. It scans every face that enters the camera's view, whether they are part of your household or not. Friends, neighbors, delivery drivers, people walking past your home. All of them are processed by the system, even if only temporarily.

And that is the key issue. Most of the people whose faces are scanned never consented. They were never informed. They were never given a choice.

Optional for the homeowner does not mean ethical for everyone else.

"But It's Secure, Right?" The Promise Versus the Reality

Amazon states that facial data is encrypted, that unnamed faces are deleted after a set period, and that the data is not used to train broader AI models.

On paper, that sounds reassuring.

In practice, trust is earned, not declared. Ring has already faced serious scrutiny in the past for weak internal access controls, where employees and contractors were able to view customer footage. That history matters, especially when the data involved is biometric.

There is also the issue of centralization. Facial recognition is processed in the cloud, which means Amazon now holds an enormous collection of highly sensitive biometric templates. Even if protected today, this data becomes a long-term risk surface. Breaches happen. Policies change. Law enforcement requests evolve.

And if biometric data leaks, the damage is permanent. You cannot change your face.

The People You Never Meant to Capture

One of the most unsettling aspects of Familiar Faces is how it affects people who are not Ring users at all.

Someone walking their dog past your house. A courier doing their job. A neighbor heading to work. Their faces may be scanned, analyzed, and briefly stored without their knowledge.

Lawmakers have already warned that features like this push us toward passive biometric surveillance at a neighborhood scale. Not because of malicious intent, but because the technology quietly normalizes it.

When millions of private devices collectively perform facial recognition, the line between personal security and public surveillance becomes dangerously thin.

Trust, Technology, and the Slippery Slope

I work in technology, automation, and security. I believe deeply in smart systems that solve real problems. But I also believe that not everything that can be built should be deployed without restraint.

This feature does not build trust. It erodes it.

If facial recognition becomes a default convenience feature for doorbells today, what becomes acceptable tomorrow? Cross-device identification? Neighborhood-level pattern analysis? Data sharing under new legal frameworks?

None of this is far-fetched. It is simply how technology evolves when friction is removed and oversight lags behind.

How to Configure Ring for Maximum Privacy

If you already own a Ring device and want to minimize risk, here is how to lock things down without sacrificing basic functionality.

1. Keep Familiar Faces turned off Open the Ring app
Go to Control Center
Select Video and Privacy
Tap Familiar Faces
Ensure it is disabled

2. Disable video sharing with third parties
Go to Control Center
Tap Video Requests
Turn off law enforcement and public safety requests

This prevents Ring from facilitating video access without your explicit action.

3. Enable end-to-end encryption
In the Ring app, go to Control Center
Select Video Encryption
Enable End-to-End Encryption

This ensures even Ring cannot access your video footage. Be aware that some smart features will be disabled, but privacy improves significantly.

4. Reduce motion capture zones
Adjust your Motion Zones so they only cover your property
Avoid sidewalks, streets, and neighboring doors

Less coverage means fewer unintended faces captured.

5. Limit video retention
Set the shortest possible video storage duration
Delete recordings manually when no longer needed

Data you do not keep cannot be misused later.

Smart home devices should protect us, not quietly profile everyone who passes by our homes.

Amazon's Familiar Faces may be marketed as convenience, but it introduces biometric surveillance into everyday life with very little public discussion and even less meaningful consent. That should concern anyone who values privacy, security, and trust in technology.
